Kraftwerk New Album For 2010...
With a boxed set of its primary catalog on the way, Kraftwerk is eyeballing 2010 for the release of its first new album since 2003's "Tour De France Soundtracks."
Co-founder Ralf Hutter tells Billboard.com that with the group's 2009 live shows -- including some featuring 3-D background graphics and several with Radiohead -- the pioneering German electronic outfit has returned to its Kling Klang multi-media facility in Dusseldorf. "There' s still time to go," Hutter reports, "but in the winter it's pretty gray here, so it's a good situation to go into the studio." As to what the album -- Kraftwerk's first without co-founder Florian Schneider, who left the group last November -- will sound like, Hutter says "it's still very early. It's still in its embryonic stage."
Hutter says he expects Kraftwerk to tour again once the album is completed and released.
Until that time, fans will be able to tuck into "The Catalogue," an eight-disc boxed set due out Nov. 17 that commemorates the 35th anniversary of Kraftwerk's breakthrough hit "Autobahn" and contains all the albums it released between 1974-2003. Each of the titles has been remastered and come in "mini-vinyl" wallet card packaging, with large-format booklets that replicate the artwork of the original releases. Additionally, 1986's "Electric Cafe" has been returned to its originally intended title, "Techno Pop."
Five of the titles, meanwhile -- "Autobahn," "Radio-Activity," "Trans Europe Express," "The Man Machine" and "Tour De France Soundtracks" -- have just been released as individual CDs. The other three albums are not currently licensed for separate release in the U.S.
"It's a piece of work that just had to be done," Hutter says of the catalog overhaul. "The quality (of previous CDs) wasn't always as it should have been...especially the artwork was just cut down from the LP format or scanned down, especially in America. Now we found the time to finish it, and we're very happy. You have everything from Kraftwerk in high (quality) formats."
Hutter says he also plans to upgrade the three Kraftwerk albums that preceded "Autobahn," though he won't predict a timetable for those. "When I find the time and go through the archives again, we'll do those also in a new format," he promises. "But my perspective now is forward for the next album."

''THE CATALOGUE'' Official release...
FOUR DECADES OF MASTERWORKS 12345678 THE CATALOGUE
CD, CD BOX SET, VINYL & DOWNLOAD
Mute: 5th OCTOBER 2009
KRAFTWERK: Electro Pioneers, living legends and globally revered masters of electronic sound, celebrate the 35th anniversary of their landmark 1974 hit ‘Autobahn’ by releasing digitally remastered versions of eight astounding albums on 5th October 2009. Rolling back musical barriers with every forward-thinking phase of their career, Dusseldorf's Zen masters of electronic minimalism laid the foundations for four decades of computerised pop and dance music. By chain reaction and mutation, they have influenced generations of artists in all genres, mapping musical futures yet to come. From Bowie to Daft Punk, Aphex Twin to Portishead, Dr Dre to LCD Soundsystem, and almost everyone in between, the mark of Kraftwerk is endless, endless.
In 2009 Kraftwerk have upgraded their Kling Klang masters with the latest studio technology and these eight magnificent recordings still sound like nothing else in the history of music. Kraftwerk are unique, pristine, profound and beautiful. Decades may pass, but their streamlined synthetic symphonies stand outside time, as fresh as tomorrow, transcendent and sublime.
12345678 The Catalogue will be released across the following formats:
. 8 x individual CDs presented in special slipcases featuring newly expanded artwork, including many previously unseen images all of which have been reproduced to the highest technical standards.
. CD Box Set containing 8 x CDs in ‘mini-vinyl’ card wallet packaging, plus individual large format booklets.
. 8 x individual heavyweight vinyl LPs with large format booklets.
. Digital downloads.
After their recent jaw dropping 3-D show at the Manchester Velodrome, Kraftwerk’s next UK live appearance will be as headliners for Bestival on 12th September.
12345678 THE CATALOGUE
AUTOBAHN (1974)
With its iconic Emil Schult sleeve, Kraftwerk release their international breakthrough album. The symphonic title track, an epic ode to the joys of motorway travel, wraps a mesmerising motorik rhythm around a sampled collage of car horns, engine noise, whirring tyres and radio crackle. In edited form, it becomes a revolutionary hit single around the world.
Elsewhere, in wordless industrial folk music, the band reveal both their light and dark sides – ‘Mitternacht’ is all creeping midnight shadows, while ‘Morgenspaziergang’ is fresh with morning dew and birdsong. Two versions of ‘Kometenmelodie’, one a starkly gothic prowl, the other a sunny electro boogie, provide further instrumental sound paintings. Pure and strong and bold, Kraftwerk compose cinema for the ears. The pop world falls in love with them.
RADIO-ACTIVITY (1975)
Kraftwerk embrace the atomic age with mixed emotions. Surfing on sine waves, scanning the stratosphere for stray radio signals, they plug themselves into a buzzing grid of energy and communication. From the stately eco-angst anthem ‘Radioactivity’ to the synthetic Gregorian chants of ‘Radio Stars’ and the melancholy machine processional of ‘Ohm Sweet Ohm’, a sombre but engrossing monumentalism dominates.
With heavily processed vocals in both German and English, Kraftwerk go global with depth and majesty. If factories and power stations are the new cathedrals, they write liturgies for a new industrial epoch.
TRANS EUROPE EXPRESS (1977)
Kraftwerk celebrate Europe's romantic past and shimmering future with a glistening panorama of elegance and decadence, travel and technology. The infinite vistas of ‘Europe Endless’ and ‘Endless Endless’ bookend the album, which includes the unsettling Kafka-esque fable ‘The Hall Of Mirrors’ and the hilarious ‘Showroom Dummies’ - Kraftwerk's elegantly ironic reply to critiques of their deadpan manner.
But it is the streamlined rhythmic locomotive of ‘Trans Europe Express’ which dominates with its doppler-effect melodic swerves and hypnotic, pneumatic, piston-pumping rhythm. Along with its sister track, ‘Metal On Metal’ which New York DJ Afrika Bambaataa would re-construct five years later for his own seminal ‘Planet Rock’, this milestone in avant-pop modernism later becomes a crucial influence on the early pioneers of hip-hop & sampling, electro and industrial music. Poetry in motion.
THE MAN MACHINE (1978)
A bold new look, sound and concept for Kraftwerk. Over supple processed rhythms which predate the rise of European techno and trance, they address automation and alienation, space travel and engineering, the seductive allure of urban landscapes and the vacant glamour of celebrity. Clipped and funky, ‘The Robots’ adds another dimension to Kraftwerk's ultra-dry sense of humour. Behind its intoxicating melodic pulse, ‘The Model’ is a highly prophetic satire on the beauty industry, so ahead of its time that it only becomes a UK chart-topper by accident three years later. And ‘Neon Lights’ is Kraftwerk's most achingly romantic song to date, a sci-fi lullaby for cities at twilight. Pure magic.
COMPUTER WORLD (1981)
Kraftwerk beam themselves into the future by writing about home computers, online dating and globalised electronic surveillance years before these phenomena truly come into being. A journey into the bright hopes and dark fears of the booming microchip revolution, ‘Computer World’ is a serenely beautiful and almost seamless collage of sensual melodies and liquid beatscapes. Tracks like ‘Numbers’ and ‘Pocket Calculator’, with their weightless bleeps and elastic beats, predict the silky rhythms of Chicago house and inspire a generation of Detroit techno artists. Kraftwerk's fanfare for the silicon age still sounds ageless, timeless and throbbing with invention.
TECHNO POP (1986)
Kraftwerk return from five years of silence to reclaim their throne as leaders of a machine-pop revolution that they themselves began over a decade before. Their ‘Techno Pop’ album, first released under the name ‘Electric Café’ but now restored to its originally intended title, provides a 360-degree overview of a multi-lingual, multi-channel, musically diverse global village.
From the block-rocking beats of ‘Boing Boom Tschack’ to the electronic funk and computer animation of ‘Musique Non Stop’, Kraftwerk soar into the digital age. Their first excursion into digital recording finds both beauty and unease in a polyglot world of permanent media overload. Once again, Dusseldorf’s test pilots of the musical future effortlessly break new ground.
THE MIX (1991)
Kraftwerk's first fully digital album confirmed their clubland credentials and reworked 11 of their best-loved tunes for a new generation. Painstakingly reconstructed and sequenced in the band's Kling Klang studio, new versions of tracks like ‘The Robots’, ‘Trans Europe Express’ and ‘Home Computer’ now feature more funky rhythms and cleaned-up, liquid-crystal sounds. A stark warning about pollution at Sellafield is added to the glistening overhaul of ‘Radioactivity’, sparking a war of words with British Nuclear Fuels. But most of all, ‘The Mix’ is a career-spanning collection of legendary electro anthems and a classy acknowledgment of the two-way traffic between Kraftwerk and club culture.
TOUR DE FRANCE (2003)
The year 2003 marked the centenary of the Tour de France, the conceptual starting line for Kraftwerk's first album for over a decade. Although it features an immaculate new version of a 20-year- old former single, the exquisitely graceful ‘Tour de France’, pop nostalgia is not on the menu. From the chunky cyber-funk of ‘Vitamin’ to the restless metallic shimmers of ’Aéro Dynamik’, this is emphatically the sound of 21st century techno visionaries.

Kraftwerk played live at Just a Fest, Rio and São Paulo, Brazil last 20/22 March. They opened Radiohead concert, main attraction of the event.
Almost 30 thousand people attended each 2 Kraftwerk concerts.

The stage had no curtains and we could see Fritz and Stefan setting up the equipment. At Rio some technical problems probably due short time to assembling the equipment. At São Paulo there was a problem in "THE MAN-MACHINE" (flicks and little audio freezing) probably due excess CPU load setup.

Kraftwerk played live at Ireland...
Kraftwerk played live at A Day in The Life Festival, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland on last Saturday 13th October.
Due extreme weather conditions Ireland concert originaly scheduled for next 13th September at Luggala Estate, County Wicklow, Ireland has moved to Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland.
The lineup consist of Ralf Hutter, Henning Schmitz, Fritz Hilpert, and Stefan Pfaffe (video-operator).
There is not official statement from Kraftwerk about why Florian Schneider is not included in the lineup.
They played similar "Minimum-Maximum" set-list including "Computer Love" and "Showroom Dummies". Complete set-list was:
("warm up" detuned notes followed by robovox saying "Meine Damen und Herren... Ladies and Gentlemen... Heute Abend.. Die Mensch-maschine").

18. ELEKTRO KARDIOGRAMM
19. AERODYNAMIK
20. MUSIC NON STOP (without Florian Schneider solo)
All the songs were condensed to roughly 3 to 4 minutes and were re-worked and re-mixed. Stefan spent the first half of the concert trying to sort out a misalligned left-side screen. He had to continuously look behind him to re-allign them. But was unsuccessful.
The curtains malfunctioned a number of times leaving Kraftwerk on-stage with a guy climbing up to the top of the stage trying to free them.
The music was absolutely amazing and I noticed that Kraftwerk were laughing more and really enjoying the crowd who were, in Irish fashion, going absolutely going crazy. Even singing along to Man Machine etc. The 5.000 people crowd were really going mad and Kraftwerk really responded to this.
Ralf noticed this and smiled at the others who also smiled. Pocket Calculator was incredible with the original version opening mixed with the later version.
Ralf used the vocoder live on many songs and they seemed to be really in great form.
Brilliant concert and the crowd were brilliant too.

Kraftwerk finished tour through Americas...
Kraftwerk finished its presentation on the American continents, with concerts at Brazil (3), Chile, Argentina, Mexico and USA.
All concerts were attended by a large audience (4.000 - São Paulo, 3.500 - Rio de Janeiro, 1.300 - Brasilia, 4.000 - Santiago, 4.000 - Buenos Aires, 6.000 - Mexico City, 2.000 - Miami).
The 2004 Tour will finish with the concert at Rennes, France on 4th December, at the Trans-Musicales Festival.
This was the most extensive tour of group since 1981, with 69 concerts around the world (48 in Europe, 8 in Asia, 7 in North America and 6 in Central/South America).
During this tour, the group presented to the world its new performance at stage, with several improvements in equipment (networked computer-setup with laptops, virtual instruments and samplers) and stage layout (minimal, with a impressive high-resolution projection screen showing videos synchronized with the musics), concluding with success another evolution in its career, pioneering the use of the latest audio/video technologies currently available.

Kraftwerk played at MTV Europe Music Awards 2003...
Kraftwerk played at the 2003 edition of MTV Europe Music Awards, presenting the music "Aéro Dynamik", from your last album "Tour de France Soundtracks".
The visual at stage was impressive, with video screens at background and distributed by the venue
The video of "Aéro Dynamik" was showed for the first time, bringing images of lyrics mixed with computer graphics effects.
They used the same wired frame clothes of 1998 Tour, each member with your respective laptop.
The MTV cameras took images of several angles, including from the laptops screens. The presentation had 4 minutes and looked very futuristic.

''Tour de France Soundtracks'' and new technologies...
The album "Tour de France Soundtracks" was produced on a networked computer setup with laptops SONY Vaio running Steinberg Cubase SX and TC Works PowerCore PCI as heart of the system.
All sounds were generated in computers using virtual instruments (VST) like HALion virtual sampler, Native Instruments, TC Works and others with Steinberg Cubase SX as a host.
A special feature for Steinberg Cubase SX called System Link allows full audio and MIDI control and integration between all computers in high speed like powerfull musical network.
Kraftwerk are the first artists worldwide to make use of the new TC Helicon VoiceModeler for PowerCore, having received an exclusive pre-release copy from TC Works.
Fritz Hilpert comments about VoiceModeler and PowerCore:
"It is a great tool to transform voices completely".
"We used VoiceModeler to create these whispery voices in the chorus on the track "Elektrokardiogramm". We have also used the Waldorf D-Coder on that track to create this pitched drum sound. It works really well on drums, because it can produce very punchy, metallic sounding percussion and it has excellent modulation features."
"PowerCore has played an important role in our production process, as it allowed us to run hi-end tools inside our native virtual setups, without clipping the CPU or having to get connected to our outboard gear all the time."

Ralf Hütter gave an interview to Swedish daily magazine "Dagens Nyheter".
He reveals that Kraftwerk plans a new world tour with starting in January of next year.
Ralf says: "When we toured back in 1981 we had to take everything with us. It was very risky and expensive transporting all our gear. Now we are preparing a new world tour starting in January next year and it will be possible to carry what we need for the concerts in our hand luggage!"

The two concerts announced to September at USA (at "House of Blues" of Hollywood and "Cow Palace" of San Francisco) aren't Kraftwerk shows.
This fact is causing confusion with Kraftwerk fans.
These are Karl Bartos concerts, improperly announced as Kraftwerk.
In fact the group will tour through Europe this year, but the new dates have not been confirmed yet.

See complete review of new Kraftwerk album...
The new album "Tour de France Soundtracks" have 12 tracks distributed in 57 minutes, and each one is reviewed below:
1. Prologue - 0:31- This intro is similar to the introduction of Long Distance version contained at the single, but without drums. It's a prelude to the following three tracks.
2. Tour de France - Etappe 1 - 4:28 - Similar to the single, a bit longer. That's the version used at "Tour de France" official video. Lyrics in french.
3. Tour de France - Etappe 2 - 6:41 - Similar to the Long Distance version without the introduction. Lyrics in french.
4. Tour de France - Etappe 3 - 4:07 - Similar to the single, a bit longer, with another theme at last two minutes.
5. Chrono - 3:27 - Closing of the three preceding tracks, forming an only "Tour de France" block. Evolving into faster and more intense style patterns. After 2 minutes it's back to the Etappe 3 theme and lyrics/voice.
6. Vitamin - 8:09 - Metallic beginning, lots of harmony and texture changes, with a fine melodic and funky slower track with Ralf naming the vitamines (Adrenalin, Endorphin, Elektrolyt, Co-Enzym, Karbonhydrat, Protein, A-B-C-D Vitamin...) as a chorus. The vocoder is very complex, with at least 3 levels of Ralf voice interwoven with each other, lyrics are german here.
7. Aero Dynamik - 5:05 - Robovox voices, bouncing melody pattern with a deep bass, TEE style strokes coming back every now and then, as well as metallic sounds. Lyrics in french.
8. Titanium - 3:21 - Same melody as Aero Dynamik, maintaining the same patterns. Becomes more minimalistic in the middle.
9. Elektro Kardiogramm - 5:16 - Beginning with heavy heart beats and breathing - two voices alternating, one robovox and one vocoder (Elektro / Electro Kardiogram Minimum, Maximum / beats per minute...). The heart beats and voices continue as a rhythmic pattern during the entire song. The melody is simple, but changing a lot with different textures.
10. La Forme - 8:41 - Robovox voices with lots of vocoder variations, all sung in french. The melody is a very simple, but built around the supporting bass patterns. The vocoder is working a lot here, close to the poems (vocoder poems by Florian) published a few years ago, sometimes breaking up the voice totally.
11. Regeneration - 2:05 - Continues where "La Forme" leaves of, the same melody and voice. Becomes slower and slower, thinner and thinner, until only sparse, floating sounds persist.
12. Tour de France - 5:10 - This is the same song as the 83 version, but totally re-recorded. There's more kick in the bass, the bass sound is more distinct. The voice has a little more echo/ambience. The drums are different in the pumping/rattling part, faster and more playful. The breath is like in the 83 version, but breaks up rhythmically in the end of the song.
Credits of the new work are of Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Fritz Hilpert and Henning Schmitz.
Some sample are available at BBC and Kraftwerk official website info section.
"Tour de France Soundtracks" will be launched in August 4, 2003 by EMI Music in Germany and August 19, 2003 by Astralwerks in USA.

New Kraftwerk album complete track list...
Kraftwerk website was updated with official information about "Tour de France Soundtracks" at info section.
The new album has 12 tracks:
1 - Prologue 2 - Tour de France Etape 1 3 - Tour de France Etape 2 4 - Tour de France Etape 3 5 - Chrono 6 - Vitamin 7 - Aero dynamik 8 - Titanium 9 - Elektro Kardiogramm 10 - La Forme 11 - Regeneration 12 - Tour de France
The credits for the work are of Ralf Hütter, Florian Schneider, Fritz Hilpert and Henning Schmitz.
The new album is conceptual, bringing themes concerned to "Tour de France" and cyclism.
It's a retake of the preceding project from 1983 (the Technopop album), aborted due to a bicycle accident with Ralf Hütter and the adjustement of Kling Klang Studio to the new digital technology.
Kraftwerk has recorded a brand new version of the original "Tour De France" club hit from 1983, complete with its fabulous robo-funk basslines and classic keyboard melody.
The new album will include the three versions released as a single (Tour de France 2003).
"Tour de France Soundtracks" will be launched in August 4, 2003 by EMI Music in Germany and August 19, 2003 by Astralwerks in USA.

Informations about Kraftwerk remastered releases...
The australian EMI Music Records confirms: the package of Kraftwerk australian releases, containing the albuns Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express, The Man Machine and Computer World are NOT remastered versions. Some virtual stores announced this release like remastered, causing confusion between many users and fans. The difference are the exclusive booklet printed only to these releases.
But the american EMI, through your label Capitol, really announced the release of three remastered albuns (Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express and The Man Machine). The difference between these releases and the original versions can't be evaluated until the sending of this material by the virtual stores who are selling the products.

Kraftwerk gave two shows at Japan in december, last 13/12 in Tokyo and 15/12 in Osaka, and showed basically the same repertory of last european concerts.
The group confirm your present tendency to mix old and new arrangements, bringing back sonorities from 70/80 years.
The new look of stage was maintaned, with the new setup controled by laptops and only a large video screen behind them (news.php#10/12/2002)
The members was dressed in black, without wire-frame suits or robots.
The setlist of Tokyo and Osaka shows were: - Intro (Robovox) - Numbers - Computer World - It's More Fun to Compute/Home Computer - Pocket Calculator (Dentaku) - Expo 2000 (Remix) - The Man Machine - The Robots - Tour de France - Autobahn - The Model - Neon Lights - Radioactivity - Trans Europe Express/Metal on Metal - Boing Boom Tschak/Music Non Stop

Kraftwerk uses new setup on stage...
The new setup of recent shows, with a "reduced" equipment on stage, includes a series of modifications compared to classical disposition of 80's and 90's shows.
The Kling Klang consoles and the large scale analog equipments were replaced by some of the following equipments:
:: For controling and sound generation 4 laptops Pentium SONY Vaio running Microsoft Windows XP and Cubase SX sequencer.
:: All sound is generated in laptops using virtual instruments (VST) like a HALion virtual sampler and other from Native Instruments and TC Works with Cubase SX as a host.
:: To control, mixing and modulate MIDI parameters (notes, filters, modulations, etc) of the virtual instruments using Doepfer fader boxes (maybe Doepfer Regelwerk, Doepfer Pocket Dials or Doepfer Pocket Faders).
:: To play melodies and start live samples Midiman keystation keyboards
:: A special feature for Cubase SX called System Link allows full audio and MIDI control and integration between all laptops in high speed (maybe using firewire port) with 5.1 surround sound (DVD Quality, Dolby Digital, 96khz, 24bits).
:: Video images are generated and controled by Hilpert's laptop and synchronized with music through Cubase SX and shown in a great wide screen (16x9).
:: All the equipment (laptops, keyboards and controllers) is accomodated in 4 simple consoles one for each band member.
The complete configuration obviously is not described totally here, and they are experimenting with new devices all the time. The next shows probably won't show a disposition 100% identical.

Kraftwerk plays live in Belgium...
Zaal Vooruit - 23/09/2002 - Gent - Belgium
A synopsis about this first show:
There was no synthesizers on stage, only laptops (Sony Vaio) running Steinberg Cubase SX, one for each member.
Ralf Hütter was the only member with a keyboard, the others had consoles with controllers and pedals.
The stage is clean and minimal, with only one big screen of high quality(15m x 4m) served by 3 NEC projectors, for the videos.
The racks behind them were supressed.
The four members was dressed in black, without the fluorescent stripes suits.
There was not robots or dummies appearances in this show.
The setlist was:
Start at 20:30 hs.
Vocoder voice (Meine damen und herren...) Expo 2000 (similar to Underground Resistance mix version), It's More Fun to Compute, The Man Machine, The Robots, Tour de France, Autobahn, The Model, Neon Lights, Pocket Calculator, Airwaves/Tango(ZKM track), Radioactivity, Trans Europe Express/Metal on Metal, Numbers/Computer World, Boing Boom Tschak/Music Non Stop.
End at 22:30 hs.
The setlist didn't bring great changes, with the exceptions of Expo 2000 and Neon Lights.
Expo 2000 opened the show and was played for the first time in official concerts.
During the presentation of Pocket Calculator, they didn't use the traditional small hand held devices.
Airwaves was a extended techno version (Tango), but it didn't sound exactly the same as in last shows.
Some fans reported small technical fails in the sound during the presentation of The Robots, Autobahn and TEE, probably a reflex of adaptation with virtual instruments (Cubase SX) on stage.
The sound itself was massive, Surround from all 4 corners permitting very deep basses.
The videos had small modifies, with new images to TEE, Neon Lights and Music Non Stop (without the images of Karl and Wolfgang).
The concert was photographed and recorded by some smart (and hidden) fans, then new material will appears soon.
Thanks for the report: Jimmy Dewit, Joris Hendrix, Paul Mennes, Leon Mols and Geert Lemmens.
